Support Beyond Our Doors

At Compassionate Beauty, we know that navigating cancer, hair loss, breast surgery, lymphedema and recovery can come with a lot of questions — and finding the right support isn’t always easy.

There are many wonderful programs available in Calgary and throughout Alberta that can provide financial assistance, emotional support, education, rehabilitation, practical resources and connection.

We’ve gathered some of the resources we frequently recommend to our clients below. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, currently in treatment, adjusting to life after treatment, supporting someone you love, or simply looking for a little extra help, we hope this page makes finding support a little easier.

Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) ▼

The Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) program helps eligible Albertans with the cost of certain medically required equipment and supplies.

Compassionate Beauty is an AADL-approved vendor for breast prostheses and compression garments, and we can direct bill AADL for eligible products.

Breast Prostheses ▼

AADL provides coverage for eligible breast prostheses following breast surgery. Eligibility and coverage depend on your individual circumstances, and a clinical assessment is required.

AADL operates as a cost-share program. For most eligible clients, AADL covers 75% of the approved benefit cost and the client is responsible for the remaining 25%, up to a maximum cost-share of $500 per individual or family per benefit year.

Under the AADL cost-share program, eligible clients may receive coverage toward a new breast prosthesis every three years.

Low-income Albertans and those receiving certain income assistance may be exempt from the cost-sharing portion.

Eligible Alberta seniors may receive their AADL breast prosthesis benefit at no cost when choosing the AADL benchmark product. If a different prosthesis is preferred and its cost exceeds the AADL benchmark amount, there may be a remaining balance that is the client’s responsibility.

Our experienced fitters can help you understand your AADL coverage, explain the available benchmark and upgrade options, determine what information is required, and assist with your breast prosthesis purchase.

Compression Garments ▼

AADL also provides funding for eligible ready-made and custom medical compression garments.

Coverage requires a clinical assessment and authorization by an appropriate healthcare professional. Once authorized, Compassionate Beauty can assist with measuring, fitting, ordering and direct billing eligible garments through AADL.

As with other AADL benefits, most clients are responsible for 25% of the approved benefit cost, subject to the annual $500 cost-share maximum. Cost-share exemptions may be available for qualifying Albertans.

AADL Approved Vendors: Find an AADL-Approved Vendor

Breast Cancer Supportive Care ▼

Breast Cancer Supportive Care (BCSC) is a Calgary-based program dedicated to helping individuals navigate the physical and emotional challenges that can arise during breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship.

Their services are free, and a physician referral is not required.

BCSC can provide support with concerns such as:

  • Understanding treatment and treatment-related side effects
  • Fear of recurrence
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Body image
  • Sexuality and intimacy
  • Relationship challenges
  • Cancer-related fatigue
  • Disability and returning to work
  • Survivorship and wellness
  • Support following recurrence

They also offer group programming covering a variety of topics related to living well during and after breast cancer.

Alberta Cancer Foundation – Patient Financial Assistance Program ▼

Cancer can create unexpected financial stress, especially when treatment affects your ability to work or requires additional travel, medications or other expenses.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation Patient Financial Assistance Program provides financial support to eligible Albertans experiencing financial hardship related to cancer treatment.

Assistance may be available for certain treatment-related and essential expenses. If the financial impact of cancer is becoming difficult to manage, we encourage you to speak with your cancer centre social worker about the program and whether you may qualify.

Wellspring Alberta ▼

Wellspring Alberta provides an incredible range of programs and services for people living with cancer, as well as their caregivers, supporters and loved ones.

Programs are free of charge and do not require a referral.

Wellspring offers more than 70 programs and services addressing the non-medical challenges that can come with cancer. Programs include:

  • Individual and group support
  • Caregiver support
  • Young adult support
  • Exercise and movement
  • Yoga
  • Nutrition
  • Cancer-related fatigue and symptom management
  • Body image
  • Therapeutic arts, music and writing
  • Financial and workplace strategies
  • Bereavement support
  • Educational programs and speakers

Programs are available both in person and online.

Look Good Feel Better ▼

Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) is a national charitable program helping people manage the appearance-related and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment.

Their complimentary workshops provide practical information, expert guidance and an opportunity to connect with others going through similar experiences.

Programs and resources include:

  • Skincare & Makeup – Caring for sensitive or treatment-affected skin and managing changes to brows, lashes and complexion.
  • Wigs & Hair Alternatives – Information about hair loss, wigs, scarves, head coverings and scalp care.
  • Bras & Prostheses – Information about breast forms, post-surgical garments, fittings and financial coverage.
  • Shaving & Men’s Skincare – Practical skincare, shaving and grooming information for men facing cancer.
  • Teen Workshops – Age-appropriate support for teens experiencing cancer.
  • Nutrition – Information about nutrition during and following cancer treatment.
  • Skincare & Nail Care – Support for treatment-related changes to the skin and nails.
  • Self-Care & Mindfulness – Resources to support emotional well-being.

Workshops are offered both online and at select locations across Canada.

Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre ▼

The Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre offers a wide range of supports in addition to medical cancer treatment. Depending on individual needs, patients and families may have access to psychosocial oncology, social work, psychology, spiritual care, rehabilitation, patient navigation and other supportive services.

If you’re struggling emotionally, financially, socially or practically during cancer treatment, we encourage you to speak with your healthcare team about the supports available through the cancer centre.

Canadian Cancer Society ▼

The Canadian Cancer Society provides information and support to people affected by cancer across Canada.

Available resources include cancer information, a Cancer Information Helpline, peer support and assistance accessing other community resources.

Transportation Assistance ▼

For people who are having difficulty getting to cancer treatment appointments, the Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope transportation program may be able to help.

Volunteer drivers provide transportation for eligible clients to cancer-related appointments. Financial assistance toward certain transportation costs may also be available through the Travel Treatment Fund.
